One may ask, how can the Internet be a polluter, its just a web of computers where we connect to our Facebook accounts, email, news, and information.  The truth is, the Internet is quickly becoming the largest polluter in the world.

Think about it, all these websites live somewhere. Websites reside in buildings known as data centers.  These data centers house thousands of computers.  Those thousands of computers require huge amounts of electricity, & the majority of that electricity is powered by coal.

There are alternatives out there, however most of these are not available to everyone.  Thankfully, you can offset your carbon footprint not only of yourself, but your server as well using something called Carbon Offsetting.   A carbon offset represents a reduction in emissions somewhere else – like a renewable energy or a reforestation project – to balance out the emissions you cannot reduce. Also, carbon offsets are the only way to get your carbon footprint to zero today.

We offset our office & server using carbonfund.org.  The site has a great calculator you should try out.
